System of 'one nation one election' implies election process for both centre and state legislatures
simultaneously by the voters.
India had seen simultaneous elections during 1952-1967 period but after that election cycles for lok sabha and state legislatures became unsynchronized.
India had seen simultaneous elections during 1952-1967 period but after that election cycles for lok sabha and state legislatures became unsynchronized.
Significance of simultaneous elections at present-:
1. Save huge electoral expenses by Election Commission and
political parties.
2. Focus on governance rather than on election campaigning by political parties forming governments at various levels.
3. Better use of government machinery and personnel for productive works.
4. Developmental and welfare activities will not be halted by Model code of conduct implementation.
5. Diffusing the charged political environment during election thereby reducing tension and promoting peace.

Negatives of
simultaneous election-:
1. Difficult to
implement in Parliamentary form of democracy like India
2. Needs amendments in constitutional articles like art 82, 83, 171, 172, 356 etc as well as in RPA 1951 which will be a difficult task.
3.Tenure of state governments have to be tempered with initially so as to accommodate the idea.
4. Multi party system in our country will be undermined as regional parties will lose significance in case of political wave in favour of a party at centre
6. Regional issues will be undervalued vis a vis national issues.
7. Socio-political diversity of India will be affected.

The idea of simultaneous election has got numerous merits but
it's implementation in India is practically difficult as of now.
Considering the diversity, parliamentary form of government
system, representative government and federal polity of our country, it is
advisable not to rush into its implementation rather bring about practical and
meaningful solutions so as to efficiently meet the electoral needs of the
country.
